Black and White Assignment

For this assignment, I wanted to take pictures that had a lot of patterns. I decided to pick pictures with more dull colors, because otherwise they look better with color! I took many new pictures of objects around my room, but some of the photos were old. When looking back at some of my pictures, I decided to convert them to black and white because I thought they were very eye-catching. My favorite picture was of a necklace that I placed on the bench in my room. I accented to red color, so only the bead on the necklace sticks out.

Architecture

For this assignment, I went to downtown Ann Arbor and took a pictures of the old buildings. I really liked the old buildings on campus, so I tried to capture the archaic look. As I kept taking pictures, it was starting to get darker and darker so some of the later pictures have a little bit of digital noise. My favorite picture was of the old church by the diag. I took the shot from down below between a fence, and I really like how the tree frames the church.

School Gimp Assignment

For this assignment, we took a picture of the school and used the editing tools in gimp to place unexpected objects in the picture. I decided to take a picture of the stair case and used the bucket fill tool to create a red carpet. I then cut and paste the rest of my picture, like the wedding couple and the flowers, into new layers. I really like the look of the red carpet, because you can still see the outline of the steps which makes it look more real.

Still Life

For this assignment, I chose to take pictures for the still life category. I used a black, velor blanket as the background. The material caused the light to catch it in certain ways, and the way it was propped up caused some of the wrinkles in the cloth. I took the pictures in my living room, which had many large windows and allowed for a large amount of natural light to come in. I took quite a few photos of the same subject, because I wanted to make sure that i snapped the picture at the best angle and perspective, with the light shining in just right. My favorite photos were of the Mexican Train set. I thought the colors of the trains and the dominoes really popped against the black blanket. The game set also demonstrated aperture and depth of field really well, which I thought improved the pictures quality. My final picture is a basket of pumpkins tipped over and it was my final chose because I liked how the light was hitting the basket and the pumpkins filled the wrinkles in the blanket.

Gimp Assignment 4

For this assignment, the goal was to catch the personality of the subject in a portrait photograph. The main focus in this project is the lighting. For the image against the wall, we used a technique called a bounce light. We stood by the window and then used a shiny surface, or a poster board, and reflected the natural light onto the subject's face. This way there was light shining on both sides of the face, therefore there was not any shadows. The second technique was a more professional photograph, with the "sandwich technique". With this set-up, we used a key light to shine straight on the subject, a background light for depth on the curtain, a hair light to shine from above, and a fill light to provide another light source. This type of portrait picture turned out very neat, and it looked very professional.

Animal

For this assignment, I took many different pictures of pets. I only have one dog, the white one, who's name is Snickers. The rest of the animals were friend's and neighbor's pets. There were also a few pictures of roosters and donkeys at the pumpkin patch. When capturing the pictures, I tried to show the personality of the animal. The picture I liked the best was of the donkey from the pumpkin patch. I really liked the contrast between the colors, and the shadows in the background.

Panoramic Picture

In this assignment, we took three separate pictures. Each picture had a ten percent overlap, so we could come into lab and combine them. We had to use a tripod to be sure that the pictures all had the same line across, and the manual setting to be sure that the lighting stayed the same. In lab, we used gimp to combine all three pictures into one image. We used different layers and the erase tool to make a seamless picture.

Event... the Pumpkin Patch

This past weekend, I went to Jenny's Farm Stand with my family. I took many pictures around of the nature and events that were happening at the pumpkin patch, and I really thought many of the pictures told our story of what we did there. There were many fun activities such as hayrides, pony rides, a corn maze, and of course pumpkins to pick! I choose my final picture because the picture really demonstrated to the beauty of the pumpkin patch.

Gimp Assignment 2

Today we used the GIMP program to edit a photo taken of a car. We messed with many of the different functions such as: editing certain spots out with a clone tool, darken specific parts of the car, and darkening the background. The final product looked much more professional.

Macro

For this assignment, the object was to really zoom in on the subject to get a very close up picture. I used the manua lsetting on the camera so I was constantly changing the shutter speed and aperture to make sure that just the right amount of light was being let in. I also used the macro setting so that when I took the close up, the details really popped out. I took some pictures of nature, and some other accessories I found around my house. Many of the flowers and leaves were found in my neighborhood, but I really loved the bright colors, which is why I really focused on that.

Motion

In this assignment, we learned how to use panning to capture a motion blur. We had to have a continuous motion of the camera that was the same speed as the bike so that the bike would be in full focus while the background was blurry.

Nature and Landscape

For this assignment, the goal was to capture different images of the nature around us. I took a few pictures at a soccer complex in Dearborn, and the rest of the images around downtown Saline. Some of the pictures were taken around the lake to represent the beautiful sunsets. I really wanted to emphasize the vibrant colors of the leaves changing. Many of the pictures are with trees that are green and orange or red to really show a sharp contrast.

Best Picture Information:
ISO- 100
Shutter Speed- 1/500
F stop- f/2.8

I really enjoyed getting out around Saline to take these pictures. It was the perfect time for nature because there were so many bright colors at this time of year!

Andy Warhol Effect

For this assignment we got to use GIMP for the first time. We followed step-by-step instructions on how to create the Andy Warhol effect with 4 different colors. To start off, we changed the image enhancement and made the picture black and white. We then pasted the picture four times and changed all of the colors!

Composition Assignment

In this assignment, we used many different techniques to take our pictures. These different techniques allowed our pictures to look more professional and really improve the quality of them. Rule of thirds taught us to position our subject off-center, while all of the other techniques had us capture certain objects, or views of things. Some of the techniques we focused on were: lines, depth of field, texture, pattern, symmetry, color, perspective, framing, space, and balance.

  • Rule of thirds = tennis ball on the sidewalk
  • Patterns = trash cans in the lunch room
  • Texture = crack in the pavement
  • Symmetry = light pole in bus loop
  • Lines = windows
  • Depth of Field = looking up at the brick wall
  • Framing = Leslie in between books
  • Space = flower in the grass
  • Perspective = stairs looking down
  • Color = American flag
  • Balance = color and texture of the parking lot

In this assignment, I learned that it isn't all about what the subject of the picture is, but the angle, or perspective you take it from. Especially the rule of thirds, I learned how to off-center your picture. At first I didn't understand why you wouldn't want toplace your subject off to the side or in a corner. But know looking at my pictures, they look much more professional it creates enough space for the subject. I really enjoyed taking the photos with perspective because I think it creates very different views that are exciting to look at. With this assignment, I believe that I really improved the quality of my pictures already!
